How Dreams relate to music… for me.
Ever since I became obsessed with songwriting, I have become obsessed with good songwriters.
I have found interviews online… youtube etc… with the likes of thom yorke, kurt cobain… jeff buckley. I was very interested in hearing them speak on their process. What their inspiration is… and how they translate all the events of their lives into songs. Songs that affect so many people on such a deep level.
Many of them, it seems, have a lot of songs come from dreams. Thom credits “pyramid song” (among others) as coming directly from a dream…Jeff… often cites dreams as his inspiration.
I personally, have found songs coming from my dreams as well. The most intense connection between a dream I have had and a song is “The Great Ruse.” The entire scene of the song, which directly inspired the lyrics came from a dream I had the night before writing it. Mind you, not every song is inspired by dreams obviously. The hum-drum of daily life is certainly enough to bring out some interesting musical ideas. But, there is something about the purity of having an idea stream directly from your subconscious. It feels different… pure… un-tainted.
Victor Hugo said “There is nothing like a dream to create the future.”
I say, there is nothing like a dream to create art.
